Female Reproductive System Flashcards
Released from the surface of the ovary into the peritoneal sac
Ovum
About the size and shape of an almond in its shell
Ovary
A double fold of peritoneum that hangs from the uterine tube, ovary, and ovarian ligament
Broad ligament
Muscular tube for passage of ova from the peritoneal cavity into the uterus
Uterine tube or fallopian tube
About 3 inches long, this is the hollow, muscular, pear-shaped organ that houses the developing fetus.
Uterus
The direct continuation of the ovarian ligament. It passes through the inguinal canal and fuses with the tissue of labia majora
Round ligament of the uterus
The portion that is directed into the abdominal cavity. Covered by perimetrium, visceral peritoneum
Fundus of the uterus
Lining of the uterus, which proliferates during each hormonal cycle in preparation for pregnancy. This excess tissue sloughs off as menstrual flow if the pregnancy does not occur; it helps develop the placenta if fertilization does occur
Endometrium
Muscle of the uterus
Myometrium
The neck of the uterus, which extends into the vagina. Provides an opening through which sperm can enter the uterus and menstrual flow can be eliminated from the body
Cervix
Recessed area between the cervix and the vaginal wall
Fornix
Mucous membrane lined tube leads to the outside of the female body
Vagina
Erectile tissue, homologue of male penis
Clitoris
Outer, larger fold or lip. This is the direct continuation of tissue from the mons pubis and is the homologue of the scrotum in males. In female development, the tissue separates to provide openings for both the general and urinary structures
Labia majora
Smaller, inner lip. The two folds come together ventrally at the clitoris
Labia minora
