Female Reproductive System Flashcards
Oviduct (Fallopian Tubes)
- 2 of them
- Opens and connects to the uterine horn
- Transports sperm and ova
- **Site of fertilization
What is the funnel like structure that channels released ovum to the oviduct?
Infundiubulum
Corpus Luteum
- Develop after ovulation and produce the hormone progesterone
The uterus is composed of what 3 structures?
- Uterine horns
- Uterine body
- Cervix
What are the functions of the uterus?
- Secretes fluids that bathe sperm
- Serves as passageway for actively transporting sperm to the oviduct
- the placenta attatches to the uterine wall during implatntation and pregnancy
- Becomes the incubator for the
developing fetus in mammalian species - Supplies nourishment to the embryo prior to implantation and the fetus during gestation
- The uterus contracts at parturition to expel fetus
What are the functions of the cervix?
- Gated community into repro tract
- Firm portion of tract
- Dilates during estrous and parturition
- Boars and stallions ejaculate in cervix
What is the organ of copulation?
The vagina
What intact males ejaculate into the vagina?
Ram and bulls
Where does implantation happen in cows?
The uterine body
Where does Implantation happen in pigs?
The uterine horns
What is the function of PGF2A?
If the animal is not pregnant, this hormone is released, and it goes to kill the corpus luteum. It kills the corpus luteums ability to produce progesterone which means the pregnancy is not maintains
What are the 3 stages of parturition?
- Contractions move the fetus
- Oxytocin: relaxin moves to cervixc, responsible for contractions of uterus to release fetus - Expulsion of fetus
- Prolactin: lactation milk let down. Oxytocin also squeezes cells of mammary glands - Expulsion of placenta
Gestation length of a cow?
282 days
Gestation length of a pig?
114 days
Gestation length of a ewe or doe?
150 days
