Female Reproductive Sys Flashcards
Endometrium
- outer most tissue
- made up of two layers; stratum functionalis and stratum basalis
Bulbs of Vestibule
-spongy tissue that can engorge
Transitions zone
- area where cell types change
- cell most susceptible to HPV virus
Ovarian Ligament
-attaches ovary to the uterus
Round ligament
- anchors uterus to internal pelvic wall
- will expand when uterus grows during pregnancy
Broad ligament
-Keeps everything in place
Suspensory ligment
-part of the broad ligament, surrounds blood vessels that lead to the ovary
Vulva
-external female genitalia
Mons Pubis
-has many nerve endings
Labium Majora
-pubic hair
Labium Manora
- Comes from spongy tissue, can be engorged
- vestibule(within labia manora)
Vestibule
-contains urethra orfice and vaginal orfice
primary follicle
-contains primary oocyte(46d)
secondary follicle
- layers of granulosa cells surrounding oocyte
- including an outer layer of thecal cells
Tertiary follicle
-contains secondary oocyte(23d)
Graffian follicle
- contains secondary oocyte
- cumulus oophorus attaches oocyte to wall of follicle
Granulosa cells
- surround oocyte, connected by gap junctions
- produce large amounts of cAMP which is used to arrest primary oocyte at prophase I
Delta5-pathway
- cholesterol converted into androstenedione in thecal cells–>stimulated by LH
- androstenedione converted to estradiol in granulosa cells–>stimulated by FSH
Delta4 Pathway
- happens in corpus luteum in luteal cells
- progesterone produced and some estradiol
Luteal phase
-always lasts14 days
Follicular phase
- length of phase varies
- time influenced by stress, genetics, etc
Progesterone
-promotes growth of breast glands and endometrium
Suspensory ligaments of Cooper
-gives breast shape
Steridogenesis Stimulating Hormone(STP)
- produced by Sertoli cells
- it is a protein that stimulates production of testosterone by the leydig cells
LH
-stimulates production of testosterone by leydig cells
FSH
-stimulates sperm production by Sertoli cells
Inhibin
- produced by Sertoli cells when there is too much sperm
- inhibits production of FSH
