Childbirth Flashcards
Effect of CRH
- stimulates fetal adrenal glands to secrete cortisol
- increase E/P ratio
- myometrial contractions
- maturation of fetal organs
Placenta hormones
- produces large quantities of CRH
- increases E/P ratio
Birth process summary
Stage 1(effacement), stage 1(early dilation), stage 1(transition), stage 2(expulsion)
Stage 1 effacement
- contractions of 30-60sec with intervals of 5-20 min
- prosteglandins soften cervical tissue
- mucus plug dislodged and bloody show happens
- bursting of amniotic sac
Stage 1 early dilation
contraction of 60 sec with intervals of 1-3 min
-cervical dilation of 7cm
Stage 1 transition
- final phase of stage 1 labor
- 60-90 sec contractions with 1 min intervals
- fetus descends into pelvic basin
Stage 2 expulsion
- Episiotomy may e performed if necessary
- crowning
- baby rotates
Stage 3 expulsion of placenta
after birth, next contractions push placenta
-contractions inhibit uterine blood flow
Ectopic pregnancy
when implantation occurs outside of uterus
1) tubal pregnancies
2) abdominal pregnancies
Tubal pregnancy
- when implantation occurs in oviduct
- can be very dangerous
Abdominal pregnancies
- when implantation occurs in the gut, mesenteries, or ovaries
- result in fetus death, surrounded by calcium
Human Chorionic Gonadotropin(hCG)
- produced by cells that come from the chorion(cytotrophoblast)
- stimulates secretion of estrogens and progesterones by placenta
Placenta Previa
condition where placenta is lying unusually low in the uterus, covering the cervix. puts mother at risk for heavy bleeding
