Female Reproductive Cycle Flashcards
What two cycles make up the full female reproductive cycle?
Ovarian and Menstrual Cycle
What occurs during the Ovarian cycle?
Ovulation
What are the two phases in the Ovarian Cycle?
Follicular Phase (Days 1-14)
Luteal Phase (Days 15-28)
What happens during the menstrual cycle?
Menstruation
Gonadotropin Releasing Hormone (GnRH)
Stimulates the release of FSH & LH
Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH)
Stimulates the immature follicle to mature while the oocyte within is growing
Luteinizing Hormone (LH)
Allows for final maturation and release of the ovum
High levels of what hormone are secreted until ovulation?
Estrogen
What hormone surges during ovulation?
Progesterone
Estrogen
- Stimulates puberty
- Causes cervical mucus to thin and become slippery so the ovum can travel down the fallopian tube easily
Progesterone
Promotes the build up of the uterine lining to become thick and luscious for the ovum to implant in after fertilization
Graafian Follicle
Mature follicle that appears near the surface of the ovary and releases the ovum for ovulation
Luteal Phase
Begins when the ovum leaves its follicle
Corpus Luteum
Mass of cells that develops from the ruptured Graafian follicle
If the ovum is fertilized what does the corpus luteum do?
Secretes large amounts progesterone and a small amount of estrogen
