Cervix: Smooth muscle with “stiff” interlocking folds

Cervix: Smooth muscle with mucosal folds
Describe how you handle peristaltic waves in each species (bovine, equine)
Cows: can allow peristaltic waves to pass over
Equine: MUST recede with wave to prevent rectal tearing

Describe the process of equine palpation
- Reach cranioventral towards the mare’s umbilicus
- Cup your hand and pull back
- Follow the uterus from side to side towards the ovaries
Describe the location and size of the ovaries
Dorsocranial, golf ball to softball in size
What structures can you palpate on the mare’s ovaries?
Follicles only, NO CLs!
Describe how to find the cervix in the mare
- On the way out, lay your hand flat on the pelvic floor
- Palpate the floor as you retract your arm
- When your hand falls off a small ledge you have found the end of the cervix
How is the mare’s cervix different than a cow’s?
No stiff interlocking folds
