Female Anatomy Flashcards
What epithelium covers the ovaries?
Germinal (simple cuboidal)
What ligaments are associated with the ovaries?
Suspensory ligament of the ovaries (contains ovarian artery and vein).
Ligament of the ovary (from ovary to fundus of uterus).
- this continues to become the round ligament of the uterus, which inserts on the labia majora.
What artery supplies the ovaries?
Ovarian artery.
What veins drain the ovaries?
Ovarian vein - drains into IVC on right and left renal vein on left.
What epithelium is found on the uterine tubes?
Ciliated columnar cells.
What other cells are found in the epithelium? What are their function?
Peg cells - supply ovum with nutrients.
In what part of the uterine tube does fertilisation occur?
Ampulla.
What is the narrowest part of the uterine tube?
Isthmus.
What arteries supply the uterine tubes?
Ovarian and uterine arteries.
What veins drain the uterine tubes?
Ovarian and uterine veins.
What is the transition zone of the uterus and where is it found?
The transition from the endocercix to the ectocervix as cells go from mucus secreting columnar cells to stratified squamous non-keratinising cells.
What is the anatomical position of the uterus?
Anteverted (90 degree angle to vagina) and anteflexed (bent forwards on the cervix).
What artery supplies the uterus?
Uterine artery - from internal iliac artery.
What vein drains the uterus?
Uterine vein - to internal iliac vein.
What layers make up the wall of the uterus?
Myometrium and endometrium.
What structures make up the endometrium?
Stratum functionalis and stratum basalis.
The stratum functionalis is composed of the stratum compactum and spongiosum.
What epithelium lines the vagina?
Stratified squamous non-keratinising.
What arteries supply the vagina?
Uterine and vaginal arteries.
What veins drain the vagina?
Vaginal venous plexus, which drains into the uterine vein (and then internal iliac vein).
What lymph nodes drain the uterus?
Body - para-aortic
Cervix - internal iliac
What lymph nodes drain the ovaries?
Aortic
