Feeding the Competition Horse Flashcards
What factors should be taken into account?
-appitite
-protien
-work level
-fat
- competition status
-supplimentation?
Types of energy sources for the competition horse?
- fat (slow release, non-heating,)
-starch and sugar (fast release, behaviour implications, glycogen can be stored)
-oil (slow release, energy-dense, easy to digest)
What is the protien requirement?
- requirement will inrease as workload increases
-no performance advantages in feeding in excess
The importance of feeding vitimins and minerals?
-electrolytes
-mineral balences
-supplementation requireddd
Feeding endurance horses?
-high energy demand
-high sweat loss (elecrolytes)
What can protien excess cause?
- increased heat production
-acid-base balence distruption - ammonia in urine
Feeding before a race?
– do not feed a meal high in sugar and starch
- feed small ammounts of forage before a race
-a mash can be used before a race (small amounts of cereal such as bran)
- support for electrolyte loss
What are the advantages of feeding fat?
-increase metabolisum
-increase muscle glycogen storage
- delay fatigue by slowing blood glycose decline
-delay absorbtion of carbs from git
-low heat production
-reduced plasma lactate
