- the aversion of food due to distorted body image and fear of gaining weight
- Extreme is BMI below 15
- Age 14-18
- Those who develop eating disorders not only don’t like their body, but they base their self esteem on their body.
What five medical problems result due to anorexia nervosa?
- amenorrhea
- hypoglycemia
- electrolyte imbalance
- kidney dysfunction
- abnormal liver values
What subtype of anorexia nervosa has the most vulnerable patients (i.e. is most dangerous)?
Binge/purge

What are important things to ask during an interview with a patient for an eating disorder?
- Interview family
- Others around patient are concerned with eating disorder more than the patient is concerned
- Ask about associated symptoms (hair loss, hypothermia)
- Ask how they have lost the weight
- Ask age of onset (ages 16-22)
What are some types of avoidant/restrictive food intake disorders?
- Avoidance of food due to chronic illness
- Crohn’s disease lady
- Eating certain “safe foods” to eliminate anxiety
- Hard boiled egg/salmon lady
- Light colored food lady
- Various Phobias
- Fear of choking/vomiting people
