FEEDBACK MECHANISMS AND ENDOCRINE SYSTEM Flashcards
Cells that produce hormones
endocrine cells
Uses chemical cells called hormones, to send messages more slowly with far-reaching and long-term effects
Regulates metabolic proces
endocrine system
- Send messages with far-reaching and long-term effects
- Has vesicles in which hormones are synthesized
- Activates or deactivates pathways that produce enzyme
hormones
receptors on the surface of the cell that cannot pass through the lipid bilayer of the cell membrane
Water soluble (Protein)
receptors are located in the cytoplasm of the target cell, it can easily pass through the cell membrane
Water insoluble (Lipid)
Can easily diffuse into the cell
Steroid Hormones
occurs when water-soluble hormones bind to their receptors
Reception
triggers several chemical reactions
Signal Transduction
responses in the cytoplasm or nucleus
Response
- the master control of the endocrine system.
- regulates the actions of the pituitary which has two lobes posterior and anterior lobes
hypothalamus
storing and secreting the hormones oxytocin and ADH which the hypothalamus produces
Posterior lobe
produces its own hormones
Anterior lobe
when the thyroid gland doesn’t make enough thyroid hormones to meet your body’s needs.
hypothyroidism
when the thyroid gland makes more thyroid hormones than your body needs.
hyperthyroidism
are hormones both produced by the pancreas to regulate the blood glucose levels
Insulin and glucagon
