Characteristics of Dual federalism
Original federalism in the USA when being founded as a republic in the 1780s, lasted till 1920
States had strong rights and so the president and federal government was much less powerful.
the government had power that was clearly defined and limited.
Characteristics of Cooperative federalism
This was from the 1930s to 1960s where the federal governments powers over the states increased.
new executive departments were created that had power over specific things (defence and transportation)
Grants with specific purposes were increased, which specified what money had to pe spent on
Characteristics of new federalism.
This was a movement of power back to the states from the central government, which took place from the 1970s to 1990s
Republican presidents have mostly been responsible for this movement
‘block grants’ are an example of this, these grants are given to state which have no designated purpose - so states can do what they wish with them
What amendment to the constitution outlines the power of states.
10th amendment
