Federal Housing Legislation Flashcards
The Housing Act of 1934
This law created the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) to expand housing construction jobs.
FHA accomplished this by creating a program that insured private home loans and minimize risk to bankers.
The Housing Act of 1937
This act replaced the Public Works Administration’s (PWA) Housing Division with the U.S. Housing Authority (USHA).
Local USHA used their state granted powers of eminent domain to acquire housing sites.
National Housing Act of 1934
Established the FHA for insuring individual housing home mortgages.
US Housing Act (1937)
Set the stage for future government aid by appropriating $500 million in loans for low-cost housing. Tied slum clearance to public housing.
Housing Act of 1949
First comprehensive housing legislation aimed to construct about 800,000 units. Inaugurated urban redevelopment program.
Housing Act of 1954
Stressed slum prevention and urban renewal rather than slum clearance and urban redevelopment.
It also provided funds under Section 701 to create plans for cities under 25,000 population. 701 Funding was later extended by legislative amendments to foster statewide, interstate and substate regional planning.
