What happens during Federal Elections?
Canadians vote in elections for the people they want to represent them in the House of Commons.
What are members of the House of Commons also known as?
Members of parliament or MPs.
When are federal elections held?
The third Monday in October every four years following the most recent general election.

What is a electoral district?
A geographical area represented by a member of Parliament (MP).
Who is eligible to vote in Canada?
- A Canadian citizen
- At least 18 years old on voting day
- On the voter’s list
What happens after an election?
The leader of the party with the most seats in the House of Commons is invited by the Governor General to form the government. After being appointed by the Governor General, the leader of this party becomes the Prime Minister.
What is a majority government?
If the party in power holds at least half of the seats in the House of Commons.
What is a minority government?
If the party in power holds less than half of the seats in the House of Commons.
What is the role of Cabinet ministers?
Cabinet ministers are responsible for running the federal departments.
Who are members of the Cabinet?
The Prime Minister and Cabinet ministers.
What is the opposition party with the most members of the a House of Commons called?
The Official Opposition or Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition.
