Fecal Incontinence Flashcards
The _____ is approximately 30 ft (9 meters) in length and is a continuous digestive tube transversing the body cavity
Alimentary canal
IAS is a acronym for
Internal Anal Sphincter
EAS is
External Anal Sphincter
RAIR is
Rectoanal inhibitory reflex
Motility refers to
Movement
Which organ of the alimentary canal is shaped like an upside down “U”?
Large intestine
Average transit time through the colon is 36-72 hours; however , with age transit time takes longer
T/f
False
T/f the IAS (internal anal Sphincter) normally becomes thicker with age
True
Which is the only anatomic site where voluntary visceral function comes under voluntary control?
Pelvic floor
A healthy EAS (external Anal sphincter) provides which type of seal?
Airtight and watertight
Which organ is the most distensible part of the GI?
Stomach
There is no somatic nerve supply to this organ, so it is not under the voluntary control
Rectum
This organ is commonly referred to as the “colon”
Large intestine
Is it thought that excessive activity or stimulation of the ____. May be associated with fecal in continent
EAS
External Anal Sphincter
In your own words, explain what happens when the nerves from the pelvic floor signal the brain an urge to defecate through having a bowel movement
Process begins with movement of gas, liquid, or solid contents into the rectum, distention of the rectum leads to stim of pressure receptors in the pelvic floor which stimulates the recto Anal inhibitory reflex. The internal Anal sphincter relaxes pelvic floor rises and both the sphincters relax and stool is evacuation the Anal canal. If the pelvic floor fails to relax this can lead to incomplete or ineffective evacuation
Fecal incontinence is defined as the uncontrolled loss of:
Liquid stool and solid stool
While true prevalence of FI is difficult to know, which statistic best represents its prevalence?
Between 2-20%
Once cause of FI is said to be idiopathic. What does that refer to?
An unknown cause
Which diagnostic test assessed Anal sphincter function abs is indicated in FI to exclude impaired sphincter function as the cause of incontinence
Ana manometry
Which diagnostic test is one of the best tools to detect colon cancer and gastrointestinal issues?
Colonoscopy
There is no single objective study that can definitively assess all aspects is anorectal function.
T/f
True
When is a patient not a good candidate for conservative treatment?
When patient is unwilling to try conservative treatment
When the physician and patient decide the patients FI is too severe
Which type of conservative treatment is best described by “rectal sensation training?
Biofeedback
Which type of dietary adjustment has been found useful in controlling FI?
Increasing dietary fiber
Decreasing dietary fiber
