Q

In your own words, explain what happens when the nerves from the pelvic floor signal the brain an urge to defecate through having a bowel movement

A

Process begins with movement of gas, liquid, or solid contents into the rectum, distention of the rectum leads to stim of pressure receptors in the pelvic floor which stimulates the recto Anal inhibitory reflex. The internal Anal sphincter relaxes pelvic floor rises and both the sphincters relax and stool is evacuation the Anal canal. If the pelvic floor fails to relax this can lead to incomplete or ineffective evacuation

Q

While true prevalence of FI is difficult to know, which statistic best represents its prevalence?

A

Between 2-20%

18
Q

Once cause of FI is said to be idiopathic. What does that refer to?

A

An unknown cause

19
Q

Which diagnostic test assessed Anal sphincter function abs is indicated in FI to exclude impaired sphincter function as the cause of incontinence

A

Ana manometry

20
Q

Which diagnostic test is one of the best tools to detect colon cancer and gastrointestinal issues?

A

Colonoscopy

21
Q

There is no single objective study that can definitively assess all aspects is anorectal function.

T/f

A

True

22
Q

When is a patient not a good candidate for conservative treatment?

A

When patient is unwilling to try conservative treatment

When the physician and patient decide the patients FI is too severe

23
Q

Which type of conservative treatment is best described by “rectal sensation training?

A

Biofeedback

24
Q

Which type of dietary adjustment has been found useful in controlling FI?

A

Increasing dietary fiber

Decreasing dietary fiber

25
Q

Prior to interstim therapy approval for FI, what was the treatment of choice for patients with Anal incontinence and evidence of an Anal sphincter defect?

A

Sphinctoplasty
