Steel 1
There was a strike at the Putilov
steel works in Petrograd (now St
Petersburg), then the capital of
Russia.
Strike 2
The strike started big street
demonstrations, led by workers
& women demanding more bread
& an end to the war.
Local 3
Tsar Nicholas II was away at the
Eastern Front so told local
commanders to sort out the
demonstrations.
Weather
Early 1917 despite usual being cold it was warmer than usual for that time of year (Winter) in Petrograd so warm enough for people to come out and protest. “Spring like minus 5 degrees.”

However, troops sent to stop the
demonstrations deserted &
joined the rioters.

Nicholas’s ministers were so
terrified by the riots & support for
the anti-Tsarists that they fled
Petrograd. - Unloyal ministers

12 members of the Russian
parliament (the duma) made the
most of the chaos & took control
of Petrograd.

Nicholas finally tried to get to Petrograd to regain control, but his train was stopped on the way at Pskov by deserting troops desperate to stop the war.

Nicholas’s generals went to
Pskov to tell him to give up the
throne.

Same as take
12 members of the Russian parliament (the duma) made the most of the chaos & took control of Petrograd. Many of the crowd supported them to take over which helped them.
Girl (Figes)
In 1917, A girl from a crowd gave a bouquet of roses (symbol of revolution and peace) and held it out to the officer. The officer took the flowers. Proves different to 1905 where soldiers shot own people which gave crowd belief.
Soldiers
Mutiny in ranks as soldiers beat up or killed commanding officers.
Shops
Shopkeepers turned their shops into bases for soldiers
Hunts
People hunted down the police and killed them
