- Two-thirds of all children visit a physician for fever before they reach the age of 2 years
What is a fever?
> 37.5 °C axillary
Normal: 36°C-37.5°C axillary
Hyperpyrexia: >39.5°C
Describe body temperature through the day?
Highest point - early evening (5-7pm)
Lowest point – morning (2-6am)
Note: Any abnormal rise in body temperature should be considered a symptom of an underlying condition
3 Mechanisms for the pathogenesis of fever?
- Pyrogens
- Heat production exceeding loss
- Defective heat loss
What controls the temp. in a body?
Temperature is controlled by the thermoregulatory center, located in the preoptic area of the anterior hypothalamus
Name the 2 pyrogens mechanisms?
- endogenous
- exogenous
Describe the endogenous pyrogens?
Describe the exogenous pyrogens?
Name causes of heat production exceeding heat loss?
- Salicylate poisoning
- malignant hyperthermia
Name causes of defective heat loss?
- Ectodermal dysplasia
- Victims of severe heat exposure
