features of the genetic code Flashcards
what are intons
sections of dna that dont code for amino acids
what are exons
sections of dna that do code for amino acids
what are the 3 features of the genetic code
-non-overlapping
-degenerate
-universall
what does degenerate mean
meaning more than one triplet codes for the same amino acid ,this reduces impact of mutations
what does universal mean
some triplets of bases code for the same amino acid in all organisims, this means genetic engineering is possible
what does non-overlapping mean
each base in a gene is only one part of one triplet of bases that codes for one amino acid, therefore each triplet is read as a descrite unit this is an advantage if a point muation occurs it will only affect one codon and therefore only one amino acid
