FCTM > 5 App & Missed App > Non-ILS Approaches Flashcards
What RNP do you need to fly a GPS approach?
0.3 nm
On the B777, what do you need to fly a GPS approach?
Although GPS approaches normally need GPS standalone receivers to fly, the FMS with an RNP of 0.3nm or less has been approached by the FAA to fly GPS approaches.
What should you do if RNP is not in the FMS?
Manually enter it.
Which modes are approved for a non-ILS approach?
VNAV, V/S or FPA but VNAV is recommended.
Which approach types require raw data monitoring?
LOC, LOC-BC, LDA, SDF & IGS.
Where non ILS use FMS guidance (VOR TACAN NDB RNAV GPS, etc.) if raw data is available, it is recommended to monitor it.
During a VOR, DME or ADF approach when a single FMC, single IRS or single GPS, what should you do?
Radio data should be selected on both NDs and raw data must be monitored and checked for correct navigation, this check should happen no later than the FAF.
How can you check raw data for correct navigation?
Selecting POS and comparing the displayed raw data with navaid symbols on the map. Eg. the vor radials and raw DME data should overlay the COR stations shown on the map.
Display the VOR and or ADF ponters on the map display and using them to verify your position relative to map.
What is the preferred method of VOR tuning?
Procedure tuning ie. let the plane do it for you. This can be confirmed by observing the correct frequency
What are the approach requirements for approaches requiring RNP alerting?
AFM indicates that the aircraft has been demonstrated for selected RNP
- At least one GPS and one DME operational
- Any additional GPS or DME req. specified by Ops Spec. or by the selected terminal area proc.
- No NAV UNABLE RNP alert displayed during approach
- Following RNP or lower :
NDB : 0.6nm
VOR : 0.5nm
RNAV : 0.5nm
RNAV (GPS/GNSS) : 0.3nm
Are you allowed to manually enter waypoints for a GPS or RNAV approach?
No and you cannot use VNAV after the FAF on other types of approach with this method.
What is the only permitted method of manual waypoint entry in BA?
The RWY EXT method, provided the final approach track is aligned with the runway centreline.
When is it recommended to set the MDA in the MCP when using VNAV?
Only when :
- The correct profile has been confirmed in the FMC
- VNOV is the active pitch mode and remains so for the duration of the approach
- You have been cleared to fly the approach.
You were flying an approach in VNAV and you notice that VNAV is no longer annuciated on the PFD, what should you do?
Review the altitude selected on the MCP and make sure it’s safe. Significantly increased threat of CFIT.
