FC 1-8 Flashcards
Define isotope.
Atoms of the same element with a different number of neutrons, therefore different masses.
Define ion.
An atom or group of atoms that has lost or gained one or more electrons.
Define orbital.
A region of space that can accommodate up to 2 electrons with opposite spins.
Define relative isotopic mass.
The mass of an atom of the isotope compared with 1/12 of the mass of an atom of Carbon-12.
Define relative atomic mass.
The weighted mean mass of an atom of an element, compared with 1/12 of the mass of an atom of Carbon-12.
Define relative molecular mass.
The average mass of a molecule of a substance compared to 1/12 of the mass of an atom of Carbon-12.
Define relative formula mass.
The average mass of a formula unit of a substance compared to 1/12 of the mass of an atom of Carbon-12.
Define mole.
A mole is the amount of a substance that contains the same number of particles as there are atoms in exactly 12g of Carbon-12.
Define acid.
A compound that releases H+ ions in aqueous solution; a proton donor.
Define base.
A proton acceptor.
Define alkali.
A water soluble base. Releases OH- ions in aqueous solution.
Define first ionisation energy.
The energy required to remove one electron from each atom in a mole of gaseous atoms of an element.
