Define Saturated Fat and sources
Saturated fat is usually from animal source
It contains cholesterols
Sources include:
Chicken
Donuts
Cream
Butter
Coconut oil
Red Meat
Define Unsaturated fat and sources
Unsaturated fat usually comes from plant sources and oily fish
It does not contain cholesterol
Sources include:
Salmon
Avocado
Vegetable oil
Nuts/seeds
Functions of fat
Produces heat and energy
Excess fat stored as adipose tissue - keeps body warm
Protects delicate organs
e.g. Liver and Kidneys
Sources of fat soluble vitamins (A, D, E and K)
Benefits of unsaturated fats
-Omega 3 fats - type of unsaturated fat found in oily fish, nuts and seeds.
-Important for brain development
-Helps lower blood cholesterol levels - reduce risk of heart disease
Over Consumption of fat
-Eating too much fat can lead to obesity
-Too much saturated fat may lead to heart disease
-Causes high blood pressure, increases risk of coronary heart disease
Ways to reduce fat in the diet
-Low fat milk
-Low fat butter
-Low fat cream
-Reduce meat/leaner meat
-Air Fryer
-Boil/steam food
-Limit high fat food=Red meat
-Read food label
