farm budget for livestock 2 Flashcards
what is the output from a livestock enterprise?
includes not only the items one would obviously expect: includes the sales of milk, wool, manure, animal hire fees, also the value of home consumption and all transactions incolving animals and change in the value of the herd
What are poistive items in farm enterprise output calculation?
Sales of Produce (milk, wool, eggs, manure, draught power)
sales of livestock (including sold as culls)
value of home consumption of animals and produce (including emergeny slaughter)
value of livestock gien away or transfered out of the herd
DO NOT INCLUDE BIRTH
What are the negative items in farm enterprise output calculation?
purchases of livestock
value of gifts of livestock received or animals transfered into the herd: since like purchases they enter the herd as inputs and since they are included in the herds closing valuation
the net effect on the output is nil
DO NOT INCLUDE DEATHS
How can the inputs or costs be affected by the presence of livestock disease
veterinary inputs or inputs related to preventetive care are needed in order to reduce the effects of disease on a particular level
animal with the disease require mre of some inputs to maintain their production at certain level - they need more feeding, care, etc
What are the obvious disease control costs?
they include; drugs, local medicine, desinfectants, veterinary costs
-> direct costs of treating or preventing the disease and where the disease decreases animal numbers and productivity they may also lead to increased production costs (for keeping more animals, feeding higher levels of concentrates)
