Fantastic Fluids Flashcards
Know all of the properties of matter defs.
Solid- the state of matter in which the substance has a decimate shape and volume
Liquid- the state of matter in which a substance has a definite volume but no definite shape
Gas- the state of matter in which a substance has neither a definite shape or volume
What are the 5 points of the Particle Theory of Matter
1) all matter is made up of tiny particles
2) all particles in a pure substance are the same. Different substances are made of different particles
3) there is space between the particles
4) the particles are always moving. As the particles gain energy they move faster
5) the particles in a substance are attracted to one another. The strength of the attractive force depends on the type of particles
What are the 3 states of matter
Solids, liquids, and gases
List and describe the 5 states of a substance(condensation etc).
Condensation-the change from a gas to a liquid
Freezing- the change from a liquid to solid
Sublimation- change from a gas to a solid and vice versa
Vaporization- change from a liquid to gas
Melting- change from a solid to liquid
Define fluid and give 3 examples
Fluid-any substance that flows, or takes the shape of its container including liquid and gas
Be able to identify fluids from non-fluids
A fluid is something that flows where as non-fluid doesn’t flow it stays in the same place
What is density describe in several ways
Density is the amount of mass in a certain substances unit volume or the crowdedness of the particles that make up matter
How do we measure the density of a substance what tools are used
Tools we use our a measuring cup or graduated cylinder for liquids or balance for a solid. We have to measure the volume and then measure the mass before we measure the density
What Is the formula for density
Formula for density is D equals M divided by V
Define mass and volume. What is the unit used to describe each and the instrument used to find each
Mass is the amount of matter in a substance often measured with a balance in kilograms or grams. A balance is used to measure the mass of a substance. Volume is the measurement of the amount of space occupied by an object often measured with a measuring cup or graduated cylinder and leaders are cubic units. A measuring cup and a graduated cylinder are used to measure volume
If you were given the density and the volume can you calculate the mass of a substance? how list the formula
The formula is VD equals M
Given the density and the mass of a substance can you calculate the volume of that substance? list the formula
The formula is V equals M divided by D
What is buoyancy?
Buoyancy is the tendency to float or rise in the fluid
What happens to an object when the buoyant force is greater than the gravitational force
The object will float
What happens to a object when the buoyant force is less than the gravitational force on the object
It will sink
What is the definition of pressure
The force acting a perpendicular to a certain surface area
Is the definition of area
The amount of surface
What is the definition of force
A push or pull or anything that causes a change in the motion of an object
What is the formula for pressure
Pressure equals force divided by area
State Archimedes principle and define the displacement of water
Archimedes principle is the scientific principle that states that the buoyant force acting on a submerged object equals the weight of the fluid displaced by the object.
Displacement of water means that the displace takes over the space
What is the difference between hydraulic systems and a pneumatic system
Hydraulic systems are devices that can transmit applied forces through a liquid to transport something else because of pressure. Pneumatic systems use pressurized gases instead of water.
Give me one of hydraulic system advantage and one disadvantage. Give me one pneumatic system advantage and one pneumatic system disadvantage.
Pneumatic systems use gas which can be compressed. But pneumatic systems use water which cannot be compressed.
Hydraulic systems use water that can be enclosed. But pneumatic systems use gases which can get lost
What are two structures that can work by hydraulics
Pipe systems and dentist chairs
What are two structures that can work with pneumatics
Large tampers and dentist drills
