George Etienne Cartier
Wealthy businessman who invested and promoted railways. As young man fought with rebels in the rebellion of 1837 and had spent time in exile. He became leader of PARTI BLEU and was joint premier of Canada with John A. MacDonald. One of people who were driving forces behind confederation. Died in 1873
George Brown
Imposing figure. He had popular support all over Canada West and owned a newspaper with which to spread his views. Well known that Brown hated John A MacDonald. These two were political enemies. Brown was contradictory. Prejudiced against Catholics and French Canadians. Also a abolitionist and fought against slavery. After confederation Brown and MacDonald never spoke to each other again
John A MacDonald
First prime minister. Was born in Scotland like many other early Canadians. His politics were conservative and he was part of the militia unit that fought against the rebels at Montgomery’s Tavern
Is a lawyer and defended rebels in court. Also has ties to the family compact. As leader of conservative he built alliance with George Etienne Cartier of Canada East. Strengths included energy, vision, and public-speaking skills
