What is the definition of an instinctive parent?
Parents rely on instincts and are heavily influenced by their own upbringing.
What are some behaviours an instinctive parent may display?
Use the same behaviours as their parents and these may be outdated.
No boundaries set for the child.
Reactive and react to the behaviour.
Can’t say no to the child want then to be happy.
How could an instinctive parenting style effect a child’s behaviour?
The child may have been allowed to do certain things making them materialistic.
Find it hard to have take no as an answer.
Can be spoilt.

Due to the practitioner saying no they may dislike them.
What’s the definition of a helicopter parent?
Parents are heavily involved in every aspect of their child’s life.
Constantly hover around their child.
What are some behaviours a helicopter parent may display?
Parents may be controlling over their child’s life.
Helping children achieve things they can do alone eg zip their coat.
Don’t allow their child’s to take risks.
How could a helicopter parenting style effect a child’s behaviour?
The child may find it hard being alone.
Lack independence
May not take risks as they haven’t done it before or been encouraged by their parents.

They may find things hard to do independently.
May be hard to leave their parents.
What’s the definition of an uninvolved parent?
Characterised by a lack of responsiveness and attention. The parent doesn’t meet the child’s needs. Eg. Watch a child from the bench.
What are some behaviours that an uninvolved parent may display?
A lack of boundaries
May fail in their parental responsibilities and not meet the child’s needs.
Parents may take a hands off approach thinking it’s better for the child.
In extreme cases the parent may be neglectful.
How could an uninvolved parent style influence a child’s behaviour?
Child may be very independent.
This may help social development as they have more confidence.
May misbehave for attention.
Child may not ask for help.

The child may want to be independent and when help is needed they may not know how to ask for help.
Are very confident.
What’s the definition of an authoritarian parent?
Emphasis on obedience and contro, with no explanation for why the children should follow the rules. Eg. Because i said so.
What are some behaviours that an authoritarian parent may display?
Typically have lots of strict rules.
Punishments are severe.
Expect rules to be followed without explanation.
Rarely consider child’s views.
How could an authoritarian parent style influence a child’s behaviour?
Child may be worried if they make a mistake.
Children don’t understand rules.
Children’s team won’t development may be very limited as they don’t want to share opinions.
How could an authoritarian parenting style influence a child’s relationships with a practitioner?
Children at hide or lie when they make a mistake as they are punished at home.
Children may not share their views.
What’s the definition of a permissive parent?
High levels of parental responsiveness, with few rules and expectation.
Let children get away with stuff.
What are some behaviours that a permissive parent may display?
Typically these parents are responsive rather than proactive.
Some boundaries are set but rarely enforced.
Act as a friend than a parent.
Lenient.
How could a permissive parent style influence a child’s behaviour?
They may not feel a lot is expected of them.
Child has little punishments and boundaries so can be confused if they receive one.
Children may develop bad habits.
How could a permissive parenting style influence a child’s relationships with a practitioner?
The child may find the practitoners expect a lot off of them.
Rules being reinforced may be too much for the child as they don’t have this at home.
They may push boundaries.
What’s the definition of an authoritative parent?
Parents that have high standards and set clear boundaries. Encourage the child to be independent.
What are some behaviours that an authoritative parent may display?
Have firm and appropriate rules.
Encourage children’s understanding of why the rules exist.
Consider the child’s feelings.
Pro-active behaviour.
Positive behaviour management.

Child will follow firm and appropriate rules and know why they follow these.
Children will understand rules so they follow them
The child will feel validated and will want others to hear their opinion.

The child may be very well behaved and also be curious of why certain rules are set in place.
