L= metaphor, like an anchor she represents everything steady and stable in his life
I= may have held him back, prevented freedom, need to step away, kite as he is trying to fight for freedom and independence
I= a kite on its own would fly with no direction, he would be lost without her
S= caesura emphasizes its necessary for him to separate from her to become a fully independent adult

“all” he did was follow in his fathers “shadow”
L= noun, shows how he just hid behind his father round the farm
I= follows literally and metaphorically following, tryin to be him, needs to move out his fathers shadow to grow and thrive
L= determiner, implies he felt his ambitions limited by copying, trying to be his father, show you need to move away from parents to be able to grow

L= metaphor, to measuer space in the room
I= he is lost without mother, implies he feels he is lost in a different world
C= armitage moved out of home after uni, poem could emph his emotion

speaker needs his mum to guide, cant do it alone

L= noun, admires his fathers skill, wants to learn from him
I= if someone is an expert its hard to beat them, emph how he may feel inadequate
S= caesura emph his father skill and expertise as a farmer
C= Heaney came from long line of farmers but became a uni professor could suggest how he empathizes with speaker as he didn’t live up to his father

“come to help me”
L= verb , needs mother, cant do without her as they had a close bond, doesn’t want to be separated

“last one hundredth of an inch”
L= metaphor, shows mother cant let go as they are so close, as its the last bit shows she can do it to a certain point but cant bare to see him completely go

“rode me on his back”
L= verb, assoc with a horse, suggests father a huge physical presence but also he is willing to help his son, shows close and supportive rels, speaker is tired of trying to follow father and failing shows how physically supportive his father is
D= shows emotional support of him as he doesnt mind helping
C= heaneys parents let him not be farmer and be himself, shows close bond reflected in poem
