Family Diversity- ethnic differences in family patterns Flashcards
What are the trends in black families?
-Black Caribbean and black African people have a high proportion of lawn parent households
-African Caribbean are the group most likely to marry someone from another ethnic group only a quarter of African Caribbean children had two black parents
-50% of black Caribbean families are headed by a single parent
Why do black families tend to be headed by a long female?
- One pair of black families has sometimes been seen as evidence of family disorganisation that can be traced back to slavery. Under slavery children stayed with their mother and it argued that this established a pattern of family life that stayed persistent today.
- Lone parenthood is linked to high rates of unemployment among black males. It’s argued that male unemployment has been the black men are less able to provide for their family so women choose to raise their children independently. However, extended family remains important to these women as support networks are often beyond biological ties
3.mirza would argue that long parenthood is due to the high value that black women place on their independence
What are the patterns in Asian families?
-Bangladeshi Pakistani and Indian households tend to be larger than those of other ethnic groups. 4.5 people compared to 2.34 white British households
-search households sometimes contain three generations. Today seeks Muslims and Hindus are still more likely than others to live in extended families.
What are the reasons for the trends in Asian families?
- Larger household sizes are due to the younger age profile of British Asians since a higher proportion in the childbearing age groups.
- Large Asian households also to some extent reflect the values placed on extended family in Asian culture
3.ballard found that the extended family ties provide an important source of support among Asian immigrants during the 50s and 60s
4.ballard also argued that families were originally strong extended and patriarchal. On arrival to Britain, although there was that attempt to maintain family unity, this was often not possible due to British housing. Have a strong links maintained by living close to relatives and by starting businesses together.
