antidote for magnesium sulfate toxicity (decreased respiration, decreased DTR, fluid in the lungs, changes in urinary output, headache)
Calcium Gluconate
Use to prevent seizures in pre-eclamptic pregnant patients to prevent them from becoming eclamptic
Magnesium Sulfate
Patients contraindicated for NSAIDS (Motrin and Toradol)
Heavy bleeders (NSAIDs thin the blood)
- smooth muscle relaxant given subq in the arm
- used in emergencies
- immediately relaxes the uterus (to slow down contractions like if they were in preterm tabor)
- causes major tachycardia and can not be given to a patient with a HR greater than 120bpm
Turbuteline
Normal potassium level
3.5-5
Steroid to help the babies lungs develop quicker (if patient is in preterm labor)
-2 shots in the butt given 24 hours apart
Betamethosone
Given IV to reduce the effects of narcotic overdose (antidote)
Narcan
Helps uterus to contract down after delivery
Pitocin
Helps the uterus contract after delivery; contraindicated for preeclamptic patients
Methegin
*IM injection
Helps contract the uterus after delivery; contraindicated for asthmatics
Hemabate (Ha-ha-hemabate)
*IM injection
Two medications babies receive within an hour after birth
Vitamin K (IM injection in babies leg-helps baby speed up and develop clotting factors) Erythromycin (in eyes- to prevent infection)
*wait an hour after delivery to allow for bonding and breast feeding (so baby can see how to get to the nipple and to see mom)
Used for herpes; given to mom at 36 weeks to prevent legions so that mom can have a vaginal delivery (suppresses the virus)
Acocylcovir
Prostaglandin used to ripen the cervix (soften the cervix) prior to being induced with pitocin (usually patient brought in the night before)
Cervadil
All pregnant moms between 35-37 weeks of gestation are tested for this (vaginal swab)
Groupies strep
*bacteria that lives in the vagina or the rectum during pregnancy
1st line of defense used for groupies strep
Penicillin G
