What does care order mean?
Courts will give the local authority a care order to place the child in compulsory care.
When is care order used?
In cases of:
- Abuse
- Abandonment
- Drugs/alcohol
- Neglect
What is voluntary agreement?
This is when children are voluntarily placed in care. This could be short or long-term.
When is voluntary agreement used?
In cases of:
- Young parents
- Child is ill
- Parent is ill
- Parent in prison
What is a residential children’s home?
- Short term care provider, not ideal for long term
- Wherever possible children are placed in foster care
- Sometimes used for emergency overnight care until child can be placed with a foster family
- Mainly for children who struggle with family setting
What is emergency foster care?
This is when a child is placed in a foster home for a few nights until they can be placed elsewhere.
What is short break foster care (respite)?
When a disabled child or those with complex needs regularly stays for a short time with a foster family so their parents can have a break.
What is short term foster care?
This is when a child is placed with a family for up to a few months.
What is long term foster care?
When a child stays with a family for a number of years.
What is specialist thereapeutic foster care?
This is for people with complex needs, distater family has more experince dealing with these needs.
What is kinship foster care?
This is when family or friends become temporary foster parents for a child who is related to them.
What is adoption?
It is when a child is taken care of by their new parents as if they were the biological parents of this child.
What is the difference between foster care and adoption?
Foster care is temporary and adoption is permanent.
