Q

According to Katy Faust, why are both biological parents essential for children to thrive?

A

Upon birth, a child already has an existing bond to its biological mother. Unlike biological fathers and other people (women too?), a mother’s presence reduces cortisol levels and increases oxytocin levels, especially in the first couple of weeks. The mother provides female-distinct nurturing that will—in essence—lead the child to balance, thriving and independence later in life.

Q

Why does Jordan B. Peterson say womanhood is not individualized like manhood?

A

He says a woman is woman + infant.

Women are deferentially sensitive to negative emotion which makes them suffer more. One reason that’s partly true is that women sacrifice their own emotional stability and happiness to be “alarm systems” for their infant.

Q

What does Katy Faust say about same-sex parenting studies?

A

It’s very rare to have high-quality studies. Up until 2005 there was a consensus among the social scientist community that children raised by both married biological parents in a low-conflict marriage fared best.

After 2005, they started saying that the children of same-sex married couples fared no different or even better than heterosexual parents.

Q

What does Katy Faust say sociologists generally agree upon when not doing same-sex parenting studies?

A

Biological parents advantage children because they are:

• More connected
• More invested
• More protective
• More complimentary together

They also say that losing a parent due to divorce, death or abandonment results in child harms.

They also say an unrelated adult increases a child’s risk of abuse and neglect by a lot.
