What are the different types of families?
Nuclear Extended Reconstituted Single parent Same-sex
What is a nuclear family?
Consisting of 2 adults & any number of children living together
What is an extended family?
Grandparents, aunts, uncles & cousins either living all nearby or within same household
What is a reconstituted family?
Family where one or both adults have children from previous relationships living with them
Also known as step family
What is a single-parent family?
Consists of parent not living with a partner, who has most of day-to-day responsibilities for raising children
What is a same-sex family?
Same-sex couples can’t conceive together, so children may be adopted or be biological children of one member of couple, they may also be from sperm donor or surrogate birth mother
What is Christian teaching about family life?
Family members should support each other through difficult times as well as celebrating special events
Families have responsibility towards members who are sick or elderly
It’s duty of christian family to bring up next generation to follow christian faith, also teaching christian values of love & forgiveness
What is the Bible teaching on family life?
“Respect your father and mother”
“But if anyone doesn’t take care of his relatives, especially members of his own family, he has denied faith and is worse than an unbeliever” - indicates we have duty of care towards family members & is part of showing christian love. If you think it’s acceptable to show lack of care it’s as if you’re denying christian faith
“children, it is your christian duty to obey your parents, for it is the right thing to do”
“Parents, do no treat your children in such a way as to make them angry. Instead, bring them up with christian discipline and instruction”
What do christians believe parents’ responsibilities are?
caring for them properly teaching them how to love teaching them how to accept authority teaching them about God taking them to be baptised and promising to bring them up in a loving home
How has family life changed over the past century in the UK?
Effective contraception Role of women (in work) Globalisation (travelling abroad) Impact of media diversity Adoption law Religious values (decline of 60% in church attendance)
What spiritual role do parents play for their children in Christianity?
teaching their children to pray
taking their children to church
sending their children to a church school or Sunday school
encouraging their children to be baptised or confirmed
What is cohabition?
Some couples choose to live together without being married.
This doesn’t mean that they are friends simply sharing accommodation, but they are together as a couple and having a sexual relationship
What is a civil partnership?
Alternative to marriage for same-sex couples.
Civil partnerships `introduced in UK to allow same-sex couples obtain same rights & responsibilities as with civil marriage
In UK law, only same-sex couples eligible for a civil partnership
What is fostering?
Bringing up a child who isn’t biologically connected to you
What is adoption?
Action or fact of legally taking another’s child & bringing it up as one’s own
