what is a family
is a group of people who are related either through birth, marriage or adoption who give each other love and support
what might a family provide
- basic needs of food, shelter and clothing
- a base of love and support
- guidelines for support
- a setting for handing down traditions
- spiritual training
- formation of values and beliefs
what is a nuclear family
this consists of parents and their child who live together. they are an independent group who manage their own affairs.
definition of extended family
a large group of family which includes grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins etc. members of this group help and support each other. don’t have to live together
definition of single parent family
child are brought up by one parent. this may be due to seperation, divorce, unmarried mother, death of a parent, prison, work, long term illness
definition of step family
the child is blood related to only 1 parent, they may have step brothers and sisters
definition of foster family
they will take of a child who cannot be cared in their own home. this may be due to abuse, or issues with drugs or alcohol
what responsibilities do parents have to develop their childs physical and emotional self
- get to know them
- provide a suitable environment
- provide opportunities to stimulate the child’s development eg toys, books
- react in an appropriate way to their child’s behaviour
- give children responsibility to help them learn and grow
