Families And Households (Marxist Perspective) Flashcards
What is ideological state apparatus?
Institutions that spread bourgois ideology and ensure that the proletariate are in a state of false class consciousness
What is their perspective of the family?
They see the family as serving the need of a capitalist society and see the family as reproducing, nurturing and maintaining a workforce that supports capitalism.
What does Althusser suggest?
He views the family as an ideological state apparatus as they pass on the acceptance of the ruling class ideology.
What do Marxists suggest about families and inequality?
They suggest that families reproduce inequality and the transmission of wealth between generations and through monogamous marriage, keeping the wealth with a small number of families.
What does Zaretsky suggest about the family?
He argues that through the family, proletariat children are socialised to accept the embody norms and values that uphold capitalism. Children are taught inequality is normal between social classes and that it is natural.
Do Marxists see the family as an escape and haven from oppression and exploitation at work?
Yes
What is a critic of Althussers view?
It is out-dated, eg, people rarely marry just to pass on wealth to their children.
What is a critic of the family being a haven?
The family can be just as much of a source of conflict as an escape - particularly for women.
What is a critic of Marxist views of the family in general?
Marxists paint a negative view of family life, arguing that it’s purpose is to produce workers for dominant ideology but the family life can be harmonious and fulfilling.
