Families And Households (evaluation) Flashcards
1.
Evidence shows women still carry the majority of domestic tasks around the house, despite being in paid employment.
2.
WAERNESS- There’s no country in the world where men do more of the housework than women
3.
Women living with a male partner who are in full-time work are responsible for 2/3 of the time couples spend on household and childcare activities.
4.
More than 3/4 of women take most/all responsibility for household food shopping (food standards agency 2007)
5.
HARKNESS- Women are more likely to take time off paid work to look after sick children
6.
Feminists argue women entering paid work have led to them carry a ‘dual burden’ -paid work and unpaid domestic labour
7.
DUNCOMBE AND MARSDEN- argue women have a ‘triple shift’ - the dual burden and emotional work dealing with rows and upset children
Power and authority 1.
EDGELL- financial decision making, making and money management is mainly down to the man. Fewer than half working women are responsible
2.
PAHL- found there is growing individualisation in finances, couples have more independence, eg Esperanto bank accounts, more likely to be in younger couples
reasons for this-
- Men earn more - greater economic power of men
- Patriarchal gender socialisation reinforce cultural norms, women as homemaker
