Fallopian Tube Flashcards
Parts of uterine tube
× these are tortuous ducts convey ova from ovary to the uterus. Each uterine tube is 10cm in length
× infundibulum is the lateral part of the uterine tube, which opens into the pelvic peritoneal cavity. It has mucous folding called fimbriae which collects the ovum from the ovary
× AMPULLA is a dilated portion of the uterine tube called ampulla. Fertilisation occurs here
× isthmus is the medial part of the uterine tube. Act as a sphincter and allows the fertilized ovum to the uterine cavity when it is in the morula stage
× uterine/intramural part is the small medial part of the uterine tube within the wall of the uterus
Structure of the uterine tube [from outside inwards]
- outer serous coat derived from the peritoneum
- Middle muscular coat consist of smooth muscle arranged in outer longitudinal and inner circular layer
- The mucous membrane show primary, secondary, and tertiary folds. It is lined by simple ciliated columnar cells
Blood supply of uterine tube
- Supplies by branches of uterine and ovarian artery
- Venous blood is drain into uterine and ovarian veins
Applied aspects
Tubectomy: it is contraceptive method were the small section of fallopian tube is cut and tied up to prevent fertilisation
Salpingitis: inflammation of fallopian tube
Tubal pregnancy (ectopic pregnancy): fertilized ovum fail to reach the uterine cavity and undergo development inside the uterine tube. This may cause rupture of the tube hence immediate surgery is required
