fallacies are recognized types of problematic errors in reasoning.
what is ad hominem?
an ad hominem argument attacks the person rather than the contents of what they’re saying.
what are formal fallacies?
arguments that are invalid due to their structure.
denying the antecedent and affirming the consequent.
what are informal fallacies?
arguments in which the premises fail to provide the sufficient support for the conclusion or are otherwise problematic due to faulty reasoning.
what is a straw man?
involves misrepresenting someone’s position to make it easier to attack.
what is a hasty generalization?
occurs when an argument draws a conclusion based on insufficient evidence.
what is a slippery slope?
assumes that a small first step will lead to a dramatic and undesirable consequences.
tends to rely on an appeal to fear.
what is a red herring?
occurs when a claim is introduced that is not relevant to the point under the discussion.
