what is deontology?
it’s not enough to be a good person, you have to do the right things for the right reasons.
who is kant, and what did he advocate for?
he was a german philosopher.
he believed that a good will is not good bc of what it effects or accomplishes, but good in itself.
what is categorical imperative?
it is something that you must do no matter what.
what is the principle of universalizability?
it is one formulation of the categorical imperative.
act only accordingly to that maxim that you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law.
what is universalizability?
a principle that guides action.
what is the formula of humanity?
another formulation of the categorical imperative.
acting in such a way that you treat humanity never as a means to an end, but always at the same time as an end.
what is human dignity?
we can rely on other people, but we must always respect that they are their own person, not there for our own use.
what are the types on deontological theory?
agent-centered: focusing on the agents intentions and actions.
what are the challenges to deontology?
is duty enough?
there are cases where categorical imperative produces bad results.
what is utilitarianism?
most influential form of consequentialism.
the right action is the one that will produce the greatest happiness for the greatest number of people.
what is hedonism?
valuing pleasure over everything simply for the sake of it.
