Fad Diets Flashcards
What is the danger of carbohydrate restriction?
The brain needs glucose to function and carbohydrates are the source of glucose. To provide the glucose the body will partially burn fatty acids to convert them to ketones which can be used like glucose. Ketones increase blood pH so the body will seek to flush them out leading to dehydration.
What are the four types of fad diets?
Carbohydrate restriction, protein restriction, fat restriction, and calorie restriction.
What are the dangers of protein restricted diets?
Muscle soreness, general fatigue, and overall weakness. The intake of essential amino acids is compromised and may cause a halting of protein synthesis.
What are the harmful effects of a fat restricted diet?
Fat is needed for the transportation of the fat soluble vitamins. Essential fatty acids are necessary for the proper function of the brain, nerves, liver, and kidneys.
What are the health risks associated with a calorie-restricted diet?
Insufficiency glucose for daily energy needs. Fat stores may not be metabolized to meet the lack, it may come from muscle. With less food being eaten there may be a lack of vitamins, minerals, photochemical, essential fatty acids, and essential proteins.
