Factors that influence temperature and rainfall Flashcards
Name 5 factors tat influence temperature and rainfall
- Distance from equator
- Distance from sea
- Height above sea level
- Ocean currents
- Mountains
Explain why places differ in temperature (Distance from equator)
Temperature decrease with Latitude. The further away from the equator the lower the temperature.
Place close to the equator have higher tempratures
What is solar radiation
Heat from the sun
How does distance from the sea influences temperature
Place far from the sea have hotter summer and cooler winter than place close to the sea
What does inland mean?
An area that does not have access to the sea, the interior of a continent or country
How does the sea effect temperatures
- Takes a long time to heat
- It cools down slowly
- It retain its temp longer
How does land effect temperatures
- Heats up fast
2. It cools down fast
What does the sea and land effect
The air above these areas - Sea cool costal place in summer and warms them in winter.
How does the height above sea level effects the temperature
- The higher you go the lower the temp
- The temp drops 0.65 degrees for every 100m
- Air at hight altitudes is thinner
What is altitude?
Height above se level
How does ocean currents effect temperatures
- Warm water always flow from the equator and cool water always flor from the poles
- Air over warm ocean water is warmed by contact (wind) with the water
- Air over cold oceans water is cool by contact (Wind) with water
What is causes of currents?
- Winds
- Difference in water temperature
- Rotation of the earth around the sun
How does mountains (relief) effects the temperatures
The relief of the land means that some areas receive more solar radiation than others. Place that receive more hours of radiation per day will have higher temp
How does mountains effect rainfall?
- Air is forced to rise
- It cools down
- Condensation takes place
- Clouds form
It rain
What is relief?
The shape of the land
