Climate around the world Flashcards
What is the difference between climate and weather
Climate is the general condition in the atmosphere for long periods
Weather is the day-to-day conditions in short period of time
What is elements?
Main parts
What is the elements of weather
- Temperature
- Precipitation
- Humidity
- Winds
What is Precipitation?
All the forms of weather that comes from the air
What is humidity?
How much moisture there is in the air
What types of climates doe you get?
- Tropical Climate
- Sub-tropical Climate
- Temperate Climate
- Desert Climate
- Semi-Desert Climate
- Continental Climate
- Polar Climate
- Tundra and High Mountain climate
- Mediterranean Climate
Explain Tropical Climate
- Situated between 0 and 25 degree N and S of equator
- High temp and high Rainfall
- Natural vegetation is rain forest
- You get 2 type of tropical climates namely Dry and Wet
Explain Wet Tropical climate
- Closer to the equator
- Only one season
- Rainfall of 2000mm per year
Explain Dry Tropical climate
- Further from the equator
- Wet and dry seasons
- Most rainfall in wet season
Explain Sub-Tropical Climate
- Similar to the dry tropical climate
- Between 20 and 40 degrees from the equator
- on the eastern side of the continent
- Annual rainfall more than 1000mm
- Have Summer and Winter
- East coast of KZN
Explain Temperate Climate
- Situated between 40 and 65 degree N and S of equator
- Not extreme temps and rainfall
- Annual rain 1400mm
- Most rain in winter
Explain Desert Climate
- Less than 250mm rain per year
- There are cold and hot deserts
- Little vegetation
- In the hot deserts - day temp 50 degree and night 0 degree
- Sahara desert is the world larges hot desert
Explain semi - desert Climate
- Rainfall between 250mm and 500mm per year
- Usually on the borders of the hot deserts.
- The kalahari region is an example
Explain Continental Climate
- Temps between 30 and 60 degrees from equator
2. Only in northern hemisphere
Explain Polar Climate
- Two Seasons
- Short summers and very long winters
- Very low temperatures
- Little rain
Explain High Mountains and Tundra Climates
- Annual precipitins between 100 and 400mm (Snow)
- Next to the polar climates 60 to 73 degrees N and S from equator
- No trees can grow there
- Snow in summer
- Temps between 2-12 degrees
Explain Mediterranean climate
- Around the mediterranean sea
- Warm summers and cool winters
- rainfall 400 to 600 mm per year
