Factors that contribute to Diversity Flashcards
How does race and ethinicity contribute to diversity?
In Singapore the four main racial categories are: Chinese, Malay, Indian, and Others. The Ethnic Integration Policy (EIP) in Singapore was introduced in 1989 to promote interaction and harmony between citizens from the different racial categories. The EIP ensures that each HDB block is based on the racial make-up of Singapore society and prevents ethnic enclaves.
When people of different racial groups are able to interact in their HDB estates, they are better able to bond with people of different racial groups and see past their differences.
How does religion contribute to diversity?
An individual’s religion may be determined by birth or choice. They may keep to their religious beliefs regardless of race, ethnicity, or nationality. For example, Buddhists follow the teachings of Buddha, promoting peace and harmony amongst different races and religions, non-violence and appreciation of all living beings.Having different beliefs and practices may influence people’s thinking, choices, and decisions. They may bring different perspectives to a societal issue or disagree with the stances of others because they do not align with their own beliefs. How does socio-economic status contribute to diversity?
Middle SES in Singapore include office / “white-collared” jobs. PMETs are in this group (professionals, managers, executives and technicians) With more SES groups, there will be a variety in skillsets, knowledge, and different lifestyles. For example, those from the higher SES may enjoy activities such as golfing at country clubs, whereas the others may go for a swim at
sports complexes.
How does nationality contribute to diversity?
Singaporeans share the culture of “chope-ing” tables using tissue paper packets, speak in the common language of English and Singlish, and share the physical identification of a red passport and Identity Card. People may feel more connected to other members of the same nationality as they share similar language, history, and culture. This leads to a shared sense of national identity and belonging to the country which is distinct from their ethnic or religious identity.
