Factors that affect global production of oil Flashcards
crude oil
liquid consisting of hydrocarbons and organic compounds
fossil fuels
fuels formed by decomposition of buried dead organisms that contain high percentages of hydrocarbons and organic compounds
proved reserves
quantities that geological and engineering information indicates can be recovered in the future from known reservoirs under existing economic and operating conditions
reserves-to-production ratio
reserves remaining at the end of any year divided by the production in that year. the result is the length of time that those remaining reserves would last if production were to continue at that rate
where does the majority of oil production come from?
Middle east
who produces the least?
China
how many years does the world have left before oil runs out?
53 roughly
physical factors affecting global production of oil
- geology. simple geological structures e.g. anticlines, with lower faulting, create oil traps that lower production costs
- size of oil reserves
economic factors affecting global production of oil
- Alaska, production costs are increased because of severe climate and the need to preserve the permafrost layer
- environment conservation and the need to minimise disruption to animal migration may add to costs
- remoteness requires infrastructure to be built e.g. roads and pipelines which adds to production costs
