factors influencing food selection Flashcards
social practices
society has an impact on your eating patterns and habits. an example is peer pressure on what you eat
religion
religious ties have a direct impact on food choices and habits. example: jews and muslims don’t eat any pork products, muslims fast for one month every year, christians do not eat meat on Good Friday
geographic location
where you live has a great impact on your food habits. This is because certain foods can only be grown in certain areas some isolated places don’t have access to fresh food, climates restrict food availability. droughts/floods can affect food supply and costs. the landforms soil types and frequency of rain can dictate where foods can be grown successfully
economic situation
finanicial and employment of a country will determine the foods available to people. In some countries people can only afford to eat once a day.
The type of job you have and amount of money earnt impacts what you eat
technological developments
the level of technology available impacts our food habits.
farming technology allows food to be grown, harvested and processed faster, easier to obtain and less expensive.
Technology such as microwaves and microwaveable meals allow food to be heated up and eaten.
individual preferences
past experiences can influence wether you like a food or not. e.g did you get forced to eat broccoli as a child? does mangos remind you of childhood summers?religion and beliefs of individuals influence your preferences because if you have a strong belief in animal rights, you probably won’t eat meat.
allergies and intolerances
allergies and intolerances effect the food you choose and can eat. an example could be a gluten free person having an intolerance to foods containing gluten.
