Plan an armed coup which would bring him down but his plan failed because Cecil was prepared and Essex was forced to surrender.
What finally happened to Essex?
He was tried and executed in 1601.
By 1601 what did people think of Elizabeth and Cecil?
They were unpopular and the attitudes of Essex and his associates reflected a larger discontent.
