What is the difference between a men’s facial to a woman’s facial?
The techniques
Some differences in men’s skin that should be considered during a facial
-The skin — pH of a male client tends to be more acidic
-Facial Hair — Often thick & issues with folliculitis
-Oil production — Testosterone promotes an active sebaceous gland
Bacterial & Fungal infections to be aware of that relate to men’s facial hair
-Folliculitis Barbae
-Pseudofolliculitis Barbae
Folliculitis Barbae
Commonly referred to as “barber’s itch”, an infection on the face & neck where the area surrounding the hair follicle is inflamed with redness and pustules
-Caused by damage or blockage of the hair follicle, usually due to incorrect shaving
-Refer client to a physician; usually treated with a topical or oral anti-staphylococcal antibiotic
Pseudofolliculitis Barbae
-Also known as shaving rash or razor bumps; foreign body reaction
-Characterized by papules, which may be itchy
-Occurs most often in men with coarse or tightly curled hair in which the hair
curves back into the skin, creating inflammation of the hair follicles
-There are many products on the market specifically for Pseudofolliculitis Barbae
-Exfoliate using gentle scrub to remove dead skin cells & soften skin
Additional guidelines to follow during men’s facial (1-6)
-Skin benefits from an exfoliate or an enzyme treatment with an acidic pH
-Use gel in beard area because thick cream or clay masks are difficult to remove
-Use circular movements to reach the base of the follicle
-Use steam & desincrustation product to soften debris before extractions
-Use fingers or comedone remover
-Avoid trying to remove every comedone with the first treatment
Additional guidelines for men’s facial (7-12)
-Use a firming product with anti-aging ingredients
-Use downward, circular movements through the beard area
-Be sure to check in on their comfort level
-Beard oil is very beneficial during the massage
-Use a soothing and/or hydrating mask since men are unlikely to use moisturizers
