What are causes of facial nerve palsy?

A

Bell’s palsy
Trauma - base of skull fracture
Infection - Ramsay hunt syndrome, meningitis, TB, HIV
Brain stem lesions - stroke, MS, tumours
Acoustic neruoma
ENT - parotid tumours, cholesteatoma, otitis media, barotrauma
Systemic disease - diabetes, sarcoidosis, guillian-barre syndrome

What is the presentation of facial nerve palsy?

A
Usually unilateral
Facial droop
Sagging of mouth
Snarl on smiling
Drooling of saliva
Failure to close eyelids
Unable to wrinkle forehead
Dysarthria, decreased taste and hypersensitivity to sound

UMN - preservation of forehead wrinkling

LMN - loss of forehead wrinkling on affected side
