- Inflammation: sarcoidosis, lymphoma
- Traumatic injury
- Vascular (stroke)
- Malignancy: cholesteatoma, acoustic neuroma

A
- Autoimmune: Guillain-Barre syndrome, Myasthenia gravis
- Infection: Lyme disease, HIV
- Sarcoidosis
- Motor neurone disease
