Facial Nerve Flashcards
somatic sensation of CNVII
minor innervation to concha of the pinna (external ear)
special sensation (taste) of CNVII
anterior 2/3rd of the tongue
somatic motor role of the CNVII
muscles of facial expression
posterior digastric
stylohyoid
stapedius
visceral motor role of CNVII
parasympathetic supply to lacrimal, submandibular, sublingual and minor glands of the nasal cavity and palate
course of the facial nerve
- leaves brainstem at pontomedullary junction (cerebellopontine angle) and enters internal acoustic meatus
- travels through temporal bone in middle ear and leaves via stylomastoid foramen
- courses through parotid gland
what does the geniculate ganglion contain?
cell bodies of 1st order sensory neurons
role of the chorda tympani
convey taste to anterior 2/3rd of the tongue (preganglionic parasympathetic fibres to submandibular ganglion)
what symptoms does disruption of the facial nerve cause?
- lacrimal glands= dry eyes
- minor glands= dry mucosa, processes to cracking and disruption of blood supply
- salivary glands= dry mouth
what ganglion does the facial nerve pass through in the middle ear before continuing in the facial canal
geniculate ganglion
which nerve is an extension of the geniculate ganglion?
greater petrosal nerve
role of the greater petrosal nerve
carries preganglionic parasympathetic axons to pterygopalatine ganglion
what joins the greater petrosal nerve?
deep petrosal nerve post temporal bone to form the vidian nerve
what does the vidian nerve pass through?
pterygoid canal
what does the pterygoid canal contain?
deep petrosal nerve (sympathetics- no synapses)
greater petrosal nerve (parasympathetics- synapses, one of these branches is the zygomatic nerve which extends to the lacrimal gland)
