Facial Muscles OINA and Misc Denture Flashcards
Orbicularis oris ONIA
O: Medial aspect of maxilla, mandible, and modulus
I: Skin surrounding the lips
N: Facial nerve
A: Puckers lips and closes mouth
Buccinator OINA
O: Outer surfaces of alveolar process of maxilla/mandible and pterygomandibular raphe
I: Orbicular oris and modiolus
N: Facial nerve
A: Compresses cheeks against teeth
What muscle causes the masseteric notch?
How do you capture it during impression?
Masseter contracts causing buccinator to move in a superior and medial direction.
Having patient close while you support the impression tray will cause masseter to contract and push the buccinator medially
Depressor anguli oris OINA
O: Mental tubercle of the mandible
I: Modulus and angle of the mouth
N: Facial nerve
A: Depression of angle (frown)
Levator anguli oris OINA
O: Canine fossa of maxilla
I: Modiolus and angle of the mouth
N: Facial nerve
A: Elevates angle (smiling)
Risorius OINA
O: Parotid fascia
I: Modiolus
N: Facial nerve
A: Draws angle backwards
Zygomaticus major OINA
O: Zygomatic bone
I: Modiolus
N: Facial
A: Pulls angle superiorly and laterally (smiling)
Zygomaticus minor OINA
O: Zygomatic bone
I: Skin of upper lip
N: Elevation of upper lip
A: Facial nerve
Levator labii superioris OINA
O: Maxilla and zygomatic bone superior to infraorbital foramen
I: Skin and muscle of upper lip
N: Facial
A: Elevates upper lip
Depressor labii inferioris OINA
O: Mandible
I: Skin of lower lip
N: Facial
A: Depresses lower lip
Mentalis OINA
O: Mandible
I: Skin of chin
N: Facial
A: Protrusion of lower lip as well as elevation and wrinkling
Platysma OINA
O: Skin and fascia of infraclavicular and supraclavicular regions
I: Base of mandible, skin of cheek and lower lip, angle of mouth, orbicularis oris muscle
N: Facial nerve
A: Draws corners of mouth down, tenses skin of neck, depresses lower jaw
