Facial Muscles Flashcards
Mastication Muscles Movements
Protrusion - moves mandible forward
Retraction - pulls mandible backwards
Elevation - elevates mandible and closes mouth
Depression - depresses mandible and opens mouth
Rotation - produces side to side movements
Masseter Muscle
Origin: lower boarder of zygomatic arch bone
Insertion: lateral surface of mandible
Action: elevates the mandible
Temporalis Muscle
Origin: temporal bone
Insertion: coronoid process and rambus of the mandible
Action: mainly elevates the mandible
Medial Pterygoid Muscle
Origin: sphenoid, palatine and maxilla bone
Insertion: medial surfaces of the mandible
Action: elevation and rotation of the mandible
Lateral Pterygoid Muscle
Origin: sphenoid bone
Insertion: mandibular condyle
Action: protracts, depresses and rotates the mandible
Orbicularis Oris Muscle
Origin: medial aspects of maxilla and mandible
Innervation: buccal branch of facial nerve
Action: closes, protrudes and compresses; controls movement of lips eg sadness, anger
Bloody Supply: facial, maxillary, superficial temporal arteries
Zygomaticus Minor Muscle
Origin: lateral aspects of zygomatic bone
Innervation: zygomatic and buccal branches of facial nerve
Action: elevates upper lip, exposes max teeth
Blood Supply: superior labial branch of facial artery
Levator Labii Superioris Muscle
Origin: zygomatic process of maxilla
Innervation: zygomatic and buccal branches of facial nerve
Action: elevates upper lip
Blood Supply: facial, infraorbital branch of maxillary artery
Zygomaticus Major Muscle
Origin: posterior lateral and zygomatic bone
Innervation: buccal and zygomatic branches of facial nerve
Action: elevates and everts angles of mouth
Blood Supply: superior labial and facial artery
