Facial Bones Flashcards
Maxilla
The central, paired bone holding upper teeth in place
- the left and right maxilla fuse in the midline to form the upper jaw
- 5 main parts:
the body;
the zygomatic process
the frontal process
the alveolar process
the palatine process
Zygomatic
An irregular paired bone located at the upper lateral section
- known as the cheek bone
- 3 processes; frontal, maxillary, temporal
- articulates the frontal bone, temporal bone, sphenoid bone and maxilla
Lacrimal
The smallest and most fragile bone
- paired oblong bone situated in the anterior part of the medial wall
- 2 surfaces; lateral and medial
- provides support for the structures of lacrimal apparatus - secretes and drains tears
Inferior Nasal Concha
The longest and broadest of the conchae
- bony plate located on lateral wall of nasal cavity
- in contrast to the inferior nasal concha, it is a seperate major bone
- participates in the formation of both nasal meatus, which is responsible for airflow direction, humidification, filtering of air
Palatine
A paired bone, L-shaped located in posterior of nasal cavity
- bone is interposed between maxilla and sphenoid bones
- participates in many structures:
- horizontal plate forms posterior portion of hard palate
- perpendicular plate contributes to the boarders of pterygoid process of sphenoid bone
Nasal
A paired, rectangle bone located medial to the frontal processes of maxilla
- left and right connect at midline via internasal suture
- forms the nose bridge, nasal aperture and protect nasal cavity from external factors
Mandible
The largest bone is composed of two main parts; horizontal body and two vertical rami
- parts are connected with by the angle
- multiple seperate articulating parts
- forms contours of the face and holds lower teeth in place
- TMJ allows to move in various directions and speak and chew
Vomer
A flat plate bone situated vertically in nasal cavity
- forms bony portion of nasal septum, seperating left and right sides of the nose
